Penetrating Damp
Once a gutter overflows, the water doesn't fall harmlessly onto the ground - it runs straight down the brick face of the house, and it keeps doing that every time it rains until the blockage is cleared. Weeks of that kind of saturation eventually gets past the external pointing, and moisture works its way through to the cavity insulation behind it. Spring
Gull Nesting Season
Herring gulls nest in large numbers along the Headland cliffs and on the flat roofs around the Marina, and a sheltered gutter run makes an obvious platform.
